We place significant emphasis on the planning process and being truly prepared when you sit down to talk to someone—whether you have 10 minutes or 24 hours to plan. As with any operation we undertake, proper planning is key to the outcome and interviewing should be treated no differently.
Many programs claim to be rapport-based; yet developing rapport is a complex and dynamic process that is not always easy to grasp and that has to tie in to the interviewee’s motivations and beliefs. We bring together a significant body of research to help understand what rapport really is, how to foster it, and how to monitor rapport throughout an interview. For critical interviews, this is a team-based approach (interviewers and observers), which we strongly advocate.
In any type of interview, memory plays a central role, and we bring an expertise in the science of memory and how to work within an interviewee’s memory constructs and belief structure to gain the most accurate intelligence.
Anyone we interview has reasons not to provide us fully accurate information. Developing more than superficial rapport helps to resolve this in some instances; yet we still need a reliable and accurate method to monitor and assess credibility. Most methods we have all learned in the past are not very accurate and are not based on research. We have worked closely with the leading researchers to understand credibility and deception, to develop accurate methods of identifying credibility and detecting deception, and a plan for how to proceed when you recognize someone is not being fully truthful.
